What is an Action Item #JibberJobber

What is an Action Item #JibberJobber Related post: What is a Log Entry #JibberJobber. Today, lets power up the Log Entry and make it a lot more important. When we create a Log Entry, we are usually creating an opportunity to follow-up. When you create a Log Entry, you can make it an Action Item by simply adding a due date.  That is, put a date that you will take action on, or follow-up on, the Log Entry.  From yesterdays example, in The Good Log Entry, we put these two lines: He will follow-up with an email introduction, Said that if I don’t hear back from him by Monday then call him. and He also said he would introduce me to some contacts at the Product Management Association chapter that I really need to talk to. Didn’t have names, but follow-up on week of 4/18. The Good Log Entry was definitely good.  But what if we just log stuff, and never do anything with it? Thats where Action Items come in. A few years ago I was talking with a user who said JibberJobber is my follow-up tool.  YES! Thats exactly where the value of JibberJobber is!  Its not just organizing and tracking.  Its not a file cabinet to just put stuff in and never do anything with the stuff.  The value is that we have stuff, and we act on the right things at the right times! The next step, on creating that Good Log Entry, is to simply put a Due Date.  Lets say its for 4/18.  Then, you can get reminders at various places. Premium users can get reminders in their email, and in some countries, their text messaging.  Otherwise, on JibberJobber youll see a few reports or widgets where you can see your Action Items. We want JibberJobber to be your follow-up tool. Anyone who has been an active job seeker for more than a couple of weeks knows how crazy hard it can be to keep up on everything you are doing and almost everything could use some TLC in the form of a follow-up. Thats where JibberJobber comes in. Can you create an Action Item with Email2Log? Yes! Just put a line like this anywhere in the body of the email: startdate:___________ The ____ can have a date, like 4/18/2016, or something like this: +4 days. The UK is Falling Behind in the Global Skills Race

The UK is Falling Behind in the Global Skills Race The UK’s skills crisis is a well-documented issue â€" one that threatens the prosperity of our future workforce and economy. But it’s not just an issue that is solely impacting us at home. Talent shortages and an ever-evolving skills landscape â€" brought on by the impact of digitalization â€" are causing problems in organizations globally, as the world grapples with the changing nature of work. But worryingly, when examining the UK’s skills gap through a global lens, the results show an even greater cause for concern. New research from City Guilds Group reveals that the UK is lagging behind in the global battle to upskill, as employers around the world race to train their workers to ensure their businesses are fit for the future. The competition is on As advancements in technology and fluctuating economies transform the skills needed in the workplace today, investment in skills and learning and development (LD) programs will be key to ensuring businesses can fend off competition and stay afloat. However, our research found that employers in developing countries with emerging economies are the most likely to ramp up investment in training their workforce in the near future, leaving developed economies like the UK in their wake. A significant 92% of Indian employers and 78% of Kenyan employers predicted a net increase in LD investment in the next 12 months, compared to just 54% of employers in the UK. This is even more concerning considering the UK workforce already feels dissatisfied with the training that’s available to them. Only 13% of UK employees would rate the LD opportunities they’ve received at their organization over the past year as very effective, compared to 31% in India. The employer-employee discrepancy The research also unveiled a worrying discrepancy between how employers and employees perceive skills gaps. While 71% of employees globally recognize that the skills they need to do their job will change in the next 3-5 years, only 66% of UK workers think their employer is keeping pace with changing skills â€" lower than the global average. However, UK employers are much more assured of their workforce, with 75% saying they’re confident they have the skilled staff they need for the next 3-5 years. This highlights a worrying perception gap, that â€" unless addressed â€" could lead to lower retention rates and compromised service levels and opportunities as employees seek out organizations who can better meet their training needs. It is critical that employers and employees in the UK work together to ensure the training being delivered in their organization is meeting both the needs of the individual and the longer-term objectives of the business as a whole. A workforce that’s armed for the future Although businesses around the world are navigating a period of immense transformation, it is perhaps fair to say that nowhere is this more evident than in the UK, where our future remains increasingly uncertain after Brexit. For generations, British businesses have relied on an influx of overseas talent in order to succeed. While it remains to be seen what the full impact of Brexit will be, it seems more than likely that access to international talent will be restricted â€" causing the skills crisis to get worse before it improves. Masters hurtling towards the finish line University of Manchester Careers Blog

Masters hurtling towards the finish line University of Manchester Careers Blog Everyones welcoming the new postgrads and undergrads but we havent forgotten that our 2014/15 Masters are still here, running full-tilt towards graduation. If youre in that category and dont yet have something lined up for when you finish, here are our just in time tips for finding a job: Looking in the UK? Dont restrict yourself to ads asking for a Masters. In the UK, few recruiters specify they need a Masters, apart from in a small number of specialist areas. Most are very happy to receive applications from Masters but dont want to exclude good graduates or those with experience. Looking elsewhere in Europe? Masters entry is often the norm. The ads we receive which do need a Masters are often for fast track management programmes for employers headquartered elsewhere in Europe. UK students can apply, but youll probably need at least one other European language in addition to English. Our EU students should have no problem there! International students? Youll need to check visa requirements, as in the UK. Looking back home for non-UK Masters? Use contacts as well as ads. (frankly, this holds true for any Masters looking for a job, anywhere!) Nows the time to get your LinkedIn profile up to scratch, get back in touch with all your family and friends, update your status online with details of the type of opportunity youre hoping for thats how you get the lucky breaks. GoinGlobal, which you can access through CareersLink, has information on professional networks for over 40 countries tap into local networks to find jobs which are never advertised. Looking for job ads suitable for a new Masters? There are over 700 ads for full-time jobs or graduate level internships on CareersLink at the moment. Some of these are for jobs which will start next autumn, but some are for immediate start. Try sorting them by CareersLink expiry date (descending) its not foolproof, but the ads which close very soon are more likely to be for immediate hire. A great way to begin is to include your highest qualification from each school. By doing this, you will not only know how to format your resume in accordance with what the client wants, but also when to format it.You can decide wh en is a good time to change the information on your resume, you can change it the day before the interview, or you can skip the writing altogether and read the publications on resume before sending it in. How To Take Control Of Your Narrative

How To Take Control Of Your Narrative How To Take Control Of Your Narrative As I tell my clients, today you are who the internet says you are. Which makes it essential for you to control the narrative. To do that you need to know whats out there and monitor your online presence going forward. Today recruiters and hiring managers are researching candidates online as part of the interview process. Make sure there are no surprises. Start by doing a Google search on yourself. This will give you an idea of what others will find out about you and anyone else with the same name. While you may not realize it, there are probably dozens, if not 100’s, of people with your name out there. Searching my name on Google turns up 9K+ results. One of them is my ex-sister in law who’s a veterinarian in California. She’s nice, I don’t know anything about the rest of them. While most things online cant be hidden from everyone (determined people will find a way), using privacy settings on Facebook will protect you from most prying eyes. Still you might want to remove posts and photos across social media platforms that might prevent you from being hired. Going forward, set a Google alert for your name. Its free, easy, and makes it easy to monitor your online presence. While youre there, set Google alerts for your target employers (you have those, right?) that way youll know whenever they are in the news. Remember, today, you are who the internet says you are. Make sure you always control the narrative.
