Masters hurtling towards the finish line University of Manchester Careers Blog
Masters hurtling towards the finish line University of Manchester Careers Blog Everyones welcoming the new postgrads and undergrads but we havent forgotten that our 2014/15 Masters are still here, running full-tilt towards graduation. If youre in that category and dont yet have something lined up for when you finish, here are our just in time tips for finding a job: Looking in the UK? Dont restrict yourself to ads asking for a Masters. In the UK, few recruiters specify they need a Masters, apart from in a small number of specialist areas. Most are very happy to receive applications from Masters but dont want to exclude good graduates or those with experience. Looking elsewhere in Europe? Masters entry is often the norm. The ads we receive which do need a Masters are often for fast track management programmes for employers headquartered elsewhere in Europe. UK students can apply, but youll probably need at least one other European language in addition to English. Our EU students should have no problem there! International students? Youll need to check visa requirements, as in the UK. Looking back home for non-UK Masters? Use contacts as well as ads. (frankly, this holds true for any Masters looking for a job, anywhere!) Nows the time to get your LinkedIn profile up to scratch, get back in touch with all your family and friends, update your status online with details of the type of opportunity youre hoping for thats how you get the lucky breaks. GoinGlobal, which you can access through CareersLink, has information on professional networks for over 40 countries tap into local networks to find jobs which are never advertised. Looking for job ads suitable for a new Masters? These are our three best starting points, particularly if youre fairly early on in your career: CareersLink our database of job ads, events and organisations for people targeting University of Manchester students, graduates and postgraduates. There are over 700 ads for full-time jobs or graduate level internships on CareersLink at the moment. Some of these are for jobs which will start next autumn, but some are for immediate start. Try sorting them by CareersLink expiry date (descending) its not foolproof, but the ads which close very soon are more likely to be for immediate hire. Graduate JobSearch weve put together over 200 live job searches from across the web, suitable for recent graduates, in 18 different job areas. Where possible, theyre also mobile-friendly, so you can browse on the bus on your phone. Our own country pages job hunting sources, networks and advice for searching for jobs back home or around the world. Finally, dont miss out on all the recruitment events happening this autumn but do be aware that most of them are aimed at jobs or postgraduate courses which are due to start in Autumn 2016! How To Take Control Of Your Narrative
How To Take Control Of Your Narrative How To Take Control Of Your Narrative As I tell my clients, today you are who the internet says you are. Which makes it essential for you to control the narrative. To do that you need to know whats out there and monitor your online presence going forward. Today recruiters and hiring managers are researching candidates online as part of the interview process. Make sure there are no surprises. Start by doing a Google search on yourself. This will give you an idea of what others will find out about you and anyone else with the same name. While you may not realize it, there are probably dozens, if not 100âs, of people with your name out there. Searching my name on Google turns up 9K+ results. One of them is my ex-sister in law whoâs a veterinarian in California. Sheâs nice, I donât know anything about the rest of them. While most things online cant be hidden from everyone (determined people will find a way), using privacy settings on Facebook will protect you from most prying eyes. Still you might want to remove posts and photos across social media platforms that might prevent you from being hired. Going forward, set a Google alert for your name. Its free, easy, and makes it easy to monitor your online presence. While youre there, set Google alerts for your target employers (you have those, right?) that way youll know whenever they are in the news. Remember, today, you are who the internet says you are. Make sure you always control the narrative.

Have More Fun With Resume Writing Examples
Have More Fun With Resume Writing ExamplesToday's resume writing is not as advanced as it used to be in the past, but it is still a great way to get ahead and learn some skills in resume writing examples. There are very few common resume writing mistakes that you must avoid. You do not have to spend your time or your money to have a fantastic resume, but you can use resume writing examples to help you keep it professional. One of the first mistakes people make is to include unnecessary information in their resumes. If there is one thing that is wrong with your resume, it is a non-personal statement. If you do not have anything to say in your resume, then you need to remove it from the resume. Personal statements are very important in a resume, but if you do not mention anything at all, then it is going to be worthless.A resume is going to have to cover a wide variety of topics and you need to show that you know what you are talking about. If you are going to list things on your resume that you think are important such as your career objectives, you need to list the wrong ones. Your goal is to highlight something that is going to have a direct impact on your career. When you have already determined which job you want to apply for, you need to be sure that the description of the job is accurate. Some jobs require more responsibility than others. You need to include the job description exactly as it was written in the job posting. The last thing that you will want to do is to go over the different aspects of your resume. It is good to have a summary of your education, work experience, and education as a graduate student, so you will want to look through your college course work and highlight any that you consider particularly outstanding.Another skill in resume writing examples that you can use is to figure out whether you have added too much information that is irrelevant to the job you are applying for. This is something that is easy to check, just keep an eye out for anything that is written that is redundant and should be cut.Getting a job when you have a resume is going to take some time and effort, but it is definitely something that you can do. Keep your resume as professional as possible by using resume writing examples. Start by doing a search on how to format a resume.

Paid Parental Leave The Decision Facing Corporate America
Paid Parental Leave The Decision Facing Corporate America This week, the House of Representatives passed a bill (tacked onto much larger one that will create President Donald Trumpâs Space Force) that will provide over two million civilian federal employees with 12 weeks of paid parental leave. Now, corporate America is feeling the pressure to keep up. As reported by Axios, on Wednesday the Business Roundtable, a coalition of CEOs led by JPMorgan Chase Co. Chairman CEO Jamie Dimon, wrote letters asking Congress and Trump to make paid family leave available to âas many working Americans as possible.â According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only â16% of private employees had access to paid family leave in 2018.â Family leave includes maternity and paternity leave. The Business Roundtable formed this summer with the goal of redefining what a corporation should be in the modern age, with the main impetus being that companies should not view making profits for their shareholders as the main priority, but should also consider their responsibility to their employees and the society at large. That said, the CEOs of the Business Roundtable have plenty of reasons to want the government to make family leave mandatory. With unemployment at a 50-year-low, workers have a good deal of bargaining power, and if private companies want to attract and retain top talent, CEOs are aware that they need to be as generous as private companies. According to Glassdoor, only a handful of companies (such as Netflix and Microsoft) offer parental benefits comparable to what the federal government will provide. And by getting the federal government to make family leave mandatory, CEOs wonât have to pony up to compete. Instead, âprograms under consideration in this White House do not raise taxes on businesses, but instead allow employees to pull forward from either the child tax credit that they are eligible for or social securityâ"so there are no additional costs on business.â This change for federal workers might be only the start of things to come.
